Wednesday the National Farmers Union launched a new Biofuels Initiative. Their goal is to get increased ethanol blends into the marketplace, along with advanced biofuels. They also plan to vigorously lobby Congress and the President for support of biofuels and the Renewable Fuels Standard. NFU President Roger Johnson says they have their work cut out for them battling the oil industry.

NFU has hired former Director of Federal Affairs for the National Biodiesel Board Anne Steckel as their biofuels advisor, to help with the initiative.

Steckel says she’ll be talking to both Congress and the President about the importance of getting higher biofuels blends approved. She’ll also be battling against efforts to roll back or modify the renewable fuel standard.

Johnson says push for the initiative came from a special order of business at their National Convention brought forward by the South Dakota Farmers Union, which included a call for higher ethanol blends like E30.
