The National Farmers Union has sent some recommendations to the Natural Resources Conservation Service they think will improve the EQIP or Environmental Quality Incentives Program. The agency is in the process of releasing their interim rule on EQIP. NFU President Roger Johnson says one of their suggestions is to gear EQIP to environmental benefits, soil health and climate change.
He says NRCS should allow states to set their own high priorities for EQIP.
Johnson says more of the EQIP funding also needs to go directly to farmers and ranchers themselves.
Johnson says conserving natural resources and mitigating climate change are the top concerns of farmers and ranchers.
