June 12 is the deadline to file comment on the GIPSA Farmer Fair Practice Rules. The National Farmers Union submitted their comments this week. NFU’s Director of Government Relations Barbara Patterson says they’re in favor of the rules because of their protection for growers.
She says without the Farmer Fair Practice rules in place, growers are burdened to prove an anti competitive practice harmed the entire industry and not just the grower.
Opponents to the rule have charged there will be a slew of lawsuits if the Farmer Fair Practice rules are put in place. Patterson doesn’t think that’s a very good argument.
Patterson says debate on these rules began with the 2008 farm bill so it’s time to get them implemented and avoid any further delays.
