Last week, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson signed the Fairbanks Declaration which acknowledges the threat posed by climate change in the Arctic. National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson is hoping that’ll be an opening to get President Trump to change his stance on climate change.
Johnson says while Tillerson has recognized the need to address climate change, there are others in the administration who have the opposite view, including EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt. He says there may be an outside shot at keeping the U.S. in the Paris climate deal, but that remains to be seen.
He thinks agriculture has an opportunity to positively impact climate change if the government will work with the industry.
The Fairbanks deal signed by Tillerson was at a meeting of the Arctic Council made up of eight countries with territory bordering the Arctic Circle.
