NFU Delegates Pass Resolution on Biotech Labeling at Convention

National Farmers Union delegates passed several resolutions during their annual convention this week. They’re voicing their support for the national voluntary biotech labeling legislation being debated later this month in the Senate. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says if mandatory labeling was passed it would create trade conflicts especially without country of origin labeling in place.

He says another area of concern that drew a lot of debate has been the President’s Clean Power Plan. Sombke says there are several problems with the plan that could hurt cooperatives in the Midwest.

Sombke says delegates also reaffirmed their support for a strong renewable fuels standard and biofuels in general.

In other business, delegates re-elected Don Teske of Kansas as their National Vice President over challenger Tammy Basil of South Dakota.
