The National Farmers Union remains concerned about all of the proposed mega-mergers in the seed and crop protection industry. Syngenta’s Chairman indicated the company is in talks with Monsanto and ChemChina along with other rivals, but has yet to receive a concrete takeover offer from those companies. NFU President Roger Johnson says this follows the recent combining of Dow and DuPont.
He says there are now only six major players in the seed and herbicide business and when more consolidation occurs, farmers end up losing.
Johnson says concentration among agronomic suppliers is rising at an alarming rate with no way to stop it or even slow it down.
Johnson says NFU will continue monitoring the situation and will work closely with the Justice Department as these mergers come up for review.
