A measure has been introduced in the U.S. House to require school nutrition providers to purchase domestically produced and processed foods. National Farmers Union is supporting the legislation. Senior Vice President of Public Policy Rob Larew says the American Foods for American Schools Act of 2016 will be beneficial for U.S. farmers and ranchers

He says this new legislation is a stronger measure that requires nutrition providers to request a waiver from the USDA if they want to purchase foreign food.

Larew says it’s good the measure has been introduced now because it will bring more awareness to the issue which he hopes will help its passage.

The legislation was introduced by California Democratic Congressman John Garamendi.
