A coalition including the National Farmers Union is urging the U.S. Justice Department to do a more extensive review of the proposed Tyson Hillshire merger. NFU President Roger Johnson says he’s concerned that if the merger is allowed to go forward it will lead to more market concentration that will lead to the loss of more producers.
Johnson says the coalition NFU belongs to wants the merger review to be extended from 14 days to 30 days. Johnson says if allowed the Tyson Hillshire merger would make it possible for them to undermine their rivals by disrupting their access to pork supplies thus hampering competition.
Besides this proposed merger, the coalition wrote to the Justice Department earlier opposing the Albertsons-Safeway and Sysco-U.S. Foods mergers as well as the recent Cargill-ConAgra joint venture.
