New Texting Law to Start July

Starting July 1st, drivers in South Dakota won’t be able to use mobile electronic devices, including cell phones, for texting or other non-calling purposes while they drive.

Highway Patrol Major Jason Husby says the new law expands on what is prohibited….

Husby says there are some smart device uses that are still ok….

Husby says officers can often see how people are using their devices….

Husby says troopers want to educate the public about the new law but will also be writing tickets. Violating the new law is a primary offense and a class two misdemeanor.
