A new study released by the Iowa Pork Producers Association says the state’s pork industry contributes significantly to Iowa’s economy. IPPA President Mike Paustian says part of the reason for the study was for them to be able to show policy makers how important pork production is to everyone’s bottom line.
He says their study shows that the three pork industry sectors generated close to $41 billion in sales with pig production accounting for 34 percent of the total or close to $14 billion in sales from pork operations.
Paustian says the study also shows that Iowa’s pork industry created over 147,000 jobs.
Paustian adds that their analysis indicates that a new pig barn sources about 35 percent of inputs locally. That’s as a new barn’s construction requires several purchases including steel, concrete and equipment.
