New Rules Target Invasive Species

The discovery of some invasive species in waterways around the region is setting off a reaction.  The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission has finalized a new set of rules to reduce the spread and prevent the introduction of invasive aquatic species into the state.  Arden Peterson is the Assistant Director of Operations for the Division of Wildlife and says the new rules are designed to restrict the movement of water through the transportation of boats…

Peterson says the new rules include removing all vegetation and aquatic invasive species from boats and trailers, opening all drain plugs, and all related devices must be open or removed when in transit.  Bait and fish cannot be moved with water from the waterbody they were obtained in, but anglers can bring their own source of water to move them.  He says the rules will be enforced, and there will be consequences for those who do not comply…

The rules will go into effect 20 days after being filed with the Secretary of State’s office.  Peterson says this could be as soon as May, when the state’s anglers will be responsible to comply with the rules.  Anyone needing more information is encouraged to call the GFP.
