New Regulations to Govern Transportation of Flammable Liquids

U.S. and Canadian officials have unveiled new regulations governing the transportation of flammable liquids by rail including crude oil and ethanol. Renewable Fuel Association President and CEO Bob Dinneen says the officials are to be congratulated for coming up with a comprehensive rule.

Dinneen says U.S. and Canadian regulators were able to separate the most dangerous shipments from the others.  He says ethanol shippers have the best track record for shipments and fewer accidents than do other products including oil.

U.S. Department of Transportation officials note that the final rule represents the latest and most significant action to date in a series of nearly 30 actions DOT has initiated over the last nineteen months. U.S. DOT worked with Transport Canada in developing this rule.
