Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom have submitted a $1-billion property tax relief petition to Nebraska’s Secretary of State. The group’s President Doug Kagan says they’re seeking property tax relief in the form of rebates and want to get a constitutional amendment change on the 2020 election ballot.
He says if the rebate was larger than what a person paid in then that person would get a refund check from the state. Kagan also says the current property tax burden is forcing home owners, mainly senior citizens to leave the state and putting more strain on farmers and ranchers.
He says they have time to collect the signatures needed to get the measure on the 2020 ballot.
Kagan says they must also get signatures from at least three fifths of Nebraska’s 93 counties to make the ballot.
