Getting trade deals over the finish line is the top priority for incoming National Pork Producers Council President Dr. Howard Hill. He says leading that list is the Trans Pacific Partnership which has hit a recent snag.
TPP negotiators are meeting in Washington D.C. this week trying to unsnarl the trade barriers. Hill says even though one proposal is for Japan to move tariffs to zero in twenty years, that really isn’t a reasonable fix.
Hill says having some type of phase in period for tariff reductions is an acceptable compromise but anything long term flies in the face of a successful free trade agreement.
