Earlier this month, delegates of the National Pork Producers Council elected a Missouri pork producer as their new president. Scott Hays from Monroe City, Missouri takes the helm after Terry Wolters of Pipestone, Minnesota. Hays says his goals for the pork producers organization is to follow the strategic plans that were adopted a few years ago.
Foreign animal diseases, and specifically African Swine Fever, remains a top focus for the nation’s pork producers and Hays says the National Pork Producers Council is doing all it can to secure funding from Congress and the USDA to call for awareness to keep the deadly disease from ever entering the U-S borders. He says that even means adding more dogs to the “Beagle Brigade” at American ports.
Hays says in terms of preparedness, NPPC leaders and swine researchers have been able to learn a good deal from nations that have detected African Swine Fever in their herds.
