New Legislature Considering Medicaid Expansion

The 2015 session of the South Dakota Legislature will visit again the issue of Medicaid expansion. As part of the Affordable Care Act, hundreds of millions of dollars are available to states that expand health care coverage to low income people. In South Dakota, that would add about forty eight thousand to Medicaid coverage.

Senator Bill Van Gerpen of Tyndall, a member of the Appropriations Committee, says many lawmakers are still worried about the federal commitment.

Van Gerpen says it doesn’t look like anyone is not getting the care they need right now.

Van Gerpen says he expects some long debate about the issue.
