Organization for Competitive Market members are calling for a stricter enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act. OCM Executive Director Joe Maxwell says the weak enforcement of that is causing economic loss to the country’s farmers and ranchers.
He says due to a court case, the USDA will be coming out with a new Farmer Fair Practice Rule proposal next month. Maxwell says they want their members and others to provide comment on that new proposal.
Maxwell says without the correction needed to provide farmers and ranchers market protections, losses will continue to add up and more producers will go out of business.
Maxwell says besides weighing in on the new farmer fair practice rule due out next month, OCM is also asking Congress to place a moratorium on all large agribusiness mergers and acquisitions.
