Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack announced last week that an additional 800,000 acres of highly environmentally sensitive land may be enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program. That program has been very popular among South Dakota landowners. Kevin Luebke is the state biologist for the South Dakota State NRCS office. He says they’re pleased with the announcement and waiting to see more details.
Luebke advises anyone interested in enrolling in C-R-P or extending their current sign up to check with their local NRCS or FSA office.
He says if you have a larger amount of acres to enroll you should get into the general signup, if you have a smaller amount of acres, it’s advised to enter into the continuous signup.
USDA will accept new offers to participate in C-R-P under a general signup to be held from December 1st to February 26 of 2016. Eligible existing program participants with contracts expiring the end of September will be given an option for one year extensions.
