There is a late summer illness to be aware of. Dr. Kari Simonsen is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha and says it is called hand, foot and mouth disease.
Simonsen says symptoms include red blisters on the mouth and a rash on hands and feet. Those infected can also a fever, sore throat and have a loss of appetite. It can be spread several ways.
Hand, foot and mouth disease typically lasts a few days and medical attention isn’t required unless symptoms are severe. Simonsen says the best prevention is to wash hands frequently if you are around a sick person and make sure their surroundings and surfaces are kept clean.
