Nebraska State Senator Steve Erdman of Bayard says he’s working with several groups to get a property tax reduction measure on the 2018 ballot. He says a recent poll of Nebraskans shows 83 percent believe the state’s property taxes are too high. Erdman says the only way to address the high level of property taxes is to let the people decide.
He says they’re still writing the language for the proposed measure. However, it must be simple and straightforward so voters can understand it.
Erdman says when the Nebraska legislature put the school funding formula together the state’s three-legged tax stool was to be equally divided between sales, property and income taxes. Now he says that’s out of whack.
Erdman says farmers and ranchers have been saddled with high property taxes for the last 10 or 12 years. However, now residential homeowners are starting to see their property taxes rise, so now is the best time to move ahead with this measure.
