The progress of Nebraska’s winter wheat harvest differs with some sections of the state just getting started with test cutting and some close to wrapping up. Nebraska Wheat Board Executive Director Royce Schaneman says the yields, test weights and protein levels all vary depending on what part of the state you’re in. He says the lowest yields are in the southeast where conditions have been dry.
He says the Western part of Nebraska has seen the best yields so far with a lot of variability statewide.
Schaneman says some protein levels have ranged anywhere from 7 to 17. He also says this year’s crop looks better than past years.
Schaneman says one thing growers in the West will have to contend with is Stem Saw Fly populations that are higher than normal. He’s hoping they’ll get the rest of the wheat out before there’s any lodging problems.
