Nebraska State Senators are working on a solution to address property tax relief and school funding. LB 183, a new measure, was offered by Senator Tom Briese of Albion. Center for Rural Affairs Policy Manager Jordan Rasmussen says there are some other amendments however that would center not only on tax relief but school funding.

She says Senator Briese’s measure would raise about $100 million by eliminating some sales tax exemptions and shift that money to property tax relief.

Rasmussen says other amendments would increase the property tax credit relief fund and provide money for special education.

Rasmussen says one of the amendments would also consider how best to adjust the school funding formula and address long term property tax relief.

Speaker Jim Scheer says the legislature will adjourn earlier on May 31 rather than in June.
