LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says it will pause SNAP benefits starting today, October 29, following guidance from the USDA amid the ongoing federal government shutdown.
Governor Jim Pillen, currently on a trade mission in Israel, blamed “political games in D.C.” for the disruption, saying many families and children are about to lose access to critical food assistance.
DHHS CEO Steve Corsi says the agency is working with federal partners to resume payments as soon as the shutdown ends. In the meantime, current recipients can still use any remaining EBT balances, which remain valid for up to nine months.
Shannon Grotrian, director of the Office of Economic Assistance, says staff are still available to process applications, renewals, and changes.
Nebraskans in need are encouraged to call 211 or visit uwm211.org/nebraska-programs for help with food, housing, and financial assistance.
DHHS is also coordinating with food banks and nonprofits statewide, including Food Bank for the Heartland, Food Bank of Lincoln, and Catholic Charities, to support affected families.
