The State of Nebraska has supported a NEST 529 College Savings plan for several years, and now there are plans to enhance it.

Deputy State Treasurer Tyson Larson says they have a number of bills being introduced in the legislature…

Larson says one bill is called the “Meadowlark Plan” and would automatically open a savings plan when a child is born….

Currently only parents can get an income tax deduction for contributing to their child’s plan. Larson says they want to open that up…

Larson says they also want to eliminate the current ten-thousand-dollar cap on contributions that qualify for a tax deduction. He says by starting early, parents can fund most of a child’s college education.
