A report issued by the Platte Institute says state spending has far outpaced population growth in Nebraska.
Policy Director Sarah Curry points to several reasons for spending growth, but says policies created in Washington drive costs at the state level. . .
Curry says while Nebraska population has grown by slightly more than 30-percent the past 50 years, state spending has grown by nearly 400-percent.
Not all can be blamed on social programs. Curry points out business incentives have become a relatively new state expenditure. . .
Curry says the Unicameral tends to make cuts during the down years and has avoided debt, keeping the state out of financial trouble.
