State agencies in Nebraska have sprung into action in reaction to the flooding and that includes the Department of Agriculture. State Ag Director Steve Wellman says he’s met with the state’s farm groups to compile the mounting losses to livestock herds from death loss and displacement, feed sources, property and cropland.
He says flooding has hit grain and livestock producers in Nebraska equally hard.
Wellman says spring fieldwork and planting will also be slowed with the flooding and wet conditions and he’s expected some prevent plant acres.
Wellman says the Nebraska Department of Agriculture is coordinating various resources to help those hit by the storms and flooding.
The ag department has a toll-free number to help coordinate farmer requests and outreach. The Rural Response Hotline has also been activated to deal with mental stress. Other financial assistance programs are available through the Farm Service Agency.
