Soybean prices on the Chicago Board of Trade went up over 20 cents a bushel on Tuesday following reports there may be a breakthrough in trade talks between China and the United States. The two sides have been engaged in a trade war that has left each side leveling tariffs against each other. Nebraska Soybean Growers Association President Robert Johnston who farms near Clearwater in Antelope County is encouraged the two side are at least trying to meet.
He says the Trump administration is making efforts to help agriculture however the recent package of payments isn’t really what he and his fellow growers want. Johnston says they’d prefer trade and a resolution to the tariff dispute.
Johnston says the timing of announcing possible trade talks is good.
Treasury Secretary Steven (muh-new-shun) Mnuchin and China’s envoy and their staffs are continuing to talk about a possible meeting but the talks remain at a very preliminary stage.
