Seward County Nebraska Sheriff Joe Yocum says Sunday’s accident on I-80 near Milford that killed four people from Clinton, Iowa is one reason he is opposed to raising the speed limit on the interstate.
Yocum says back when the speed limit was 65, law enforcement constantly stopped vehicles that were traveling 80 to 90 mph. Now that the speed limit is 75, drivers are hitting the 100-mph mark and he predicts that will continue to rise.
Yocum says the vehicle that lost control before crossing the median and hitting another vehicle was driving on a bald spare.
Yocum says they did not find the tire or rim for that vehicle and they believe the travelers were using that donut as a regular tire. He says many drivers are doing the same thing which is a hazard to themselves and other drivers.
