Nebraska Senators Begin Budget Debate

Nebraska legislators could begin debating proposed changes to the 8-point-6(B)Billion dollar budget they adopted last session.
Appropriations Committee Chairman, Heath Mello of Omaha, says proposed changes by the Ricketts Administration and work by his committee has largely dealt with a projected 132-Million dollar budget shortfall. Mello says there has been an uptick in income tax revenue coming into the state, while sales tax revenue continues to lag. . .

Mello says even though 27-Million is dedicated to increasing prison space, Corrections will likely be asking for more in future years, both for programs and capital improvements. . .

Money from cash reserves would pay for the prison expansion. The committee also recommends 50-Million dollars be taken from reserves to create an infrastructure bank to pay for road construction and economic development projects.
