Nebraska State Senator Steve Erdman of Bayard last week prior to the bill filing deadline introduced a measure calling for a ballot issue to institute a single rate consumption tax. He says it would replace all the other taxes now on the books in the state and achieve the long needed goal of property tax relief.
He says there is a major difference between a consumption tax and a sales tax.
Erdman says if the Unicameral passes the measure, then it could go to the ballot via two different avenues.
Erdman says he and two other Senators met prior to the introducing the bill with Governor Pete Ricketts. He says the Governor told him about the measure that he thinks it’s a conversation worth having.
