An effort to repeal the mandatory motorcycle helmet law in Nebraska failed after supporters couldn’t overcome the filibuster mounted against it.
Senator Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins sponsored the bill and claimed he once thought he hadn’t more than enough votes to overcome the filibuster.
It takes 33 votes to end a filibuster and force a vote on the bill. Bloomfield only managed to get 24 votes.
Bloomfield says he had assurances from 34 senators that they would vote to end the filibuster, one more than the total he needed. He says some senators who assured him of their support backed out.
