Nebraska State Senator Tom Briese’s legislation, LB 314 is scheduled to be heard Thursday in the State Revenue Committee. Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen says it’s the priority measure of the Nebraskans United for Property Tax Relief and Education funding this session.

He says LB 314 calls for a slight increase in the state sales tax to help pay for property tax relief and adequately fund education.

Governor Pete Ricketts has already said he’s opposed to increasing any other taxes to achieve property tax relief. Hansen says there’s no other way to get that relief without some type of tax adjustment.

Hansen says it’s been 25 years since the sales tax base has seen any adjustment. He says LB 314 is a starting point and He and other supporters say they have a long ways to go to get that measure over the finish line.
