A Columbus, Nebraska pork producer has been named the 2017 America’s Pig Farmers of the Year by the National Pork Board. Leslie McCuiston says it’s an honor and a privilege to win the award. She says it’s important pork producers tell their story to consumers far removed from agriculture.
McCuiston, Senior Production manager for the Maschoff’s oversees 70 employees who care for more than 18,000 sows in central Nebraska and surrounding states. She says sometimes large ag operators get a black eye but that’s undeserved. She also says it’s especially so in the pork industry where producers care about their animals every day.
McCuiston says another important message she wants to relay is that pork producers are very environmentally responsible.
McCuiston was named America’s Pig Farmer of the year following a third party audit of on farm practices and after taking part in a series of written and oral interviews by subject matter experts.
