United States and Mexican officials are talking about automobiles in an attempt to break the impasse in the North American Free Trade Agreement discussions. Nebraska Pork Producers Association President Darin Uhlir says for a positive conclusion to be met on the agreement several issues other than agriculture have to be settled.
He says having a good NAFTA deal is important for the U.S. pork industry.
The Trump administration seems to be in no hurry to complete the new NAFTA but wants to make sure it’s the best deal it can get for the U.S.
Uhlir says while they’d like to see the pact finalized, it’s important to prevent any market disruptions caused by delays or negative public comments.
U.S. negotiators need to be able to craft a deal before the November midterm elections or else talks will run into 2019.
