The reintroduction of legislation to ban packer ownership of livestock by Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is facing some opposition. Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive Director Al Juhnke says he’s concerned a federal packer ban could undo a bill the Nebraska Unicameral approved this year to allow packer ownership of hogs in the state.
Juhnke says allowing packers to own hogs does benefit the average pork producer.
He says they’ll work with Nebraska’s Congressional delegation, other states and NPPC to push back against Grassley’s bill.
Juhnke says they’ll also bring up the issue during World Pork Expo in Des Moines next month in Senator Grassley’s home state.
