The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture reported this week that the African Swine Fever virus was found in two of their northern provinces. The infected animals on the three farms were culled from their herds. Herds at the neighboring farms are also being tested. Nebraska Pork Producers Association President Darin Uhlir says U.S. producers are concerned not only with the recent spread of ASF, but how best to contain it.
He says most people don’t understand how easily African Swine Fever can spread and that they need to take precautions when traveling.
Uhlir says anyone traveling internationally should make sure APHIS and U.S. Customs officials are being vigilant about checking for ASF.
Following the recent outbreak in Vietnam, their Chief of Epidemiology said that animal smuggling and tourism are making it difficult to protect Vietnam against ASF spreading further in their country.
