Mexico which is the largest importer of U.S. pork by volume has now begun talks with the European Union about sourcing pork from their countries. That’s concerning to Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive DIrector Al Juhnke.
He says the good news is that the U.S. is usually in a better position to supply pork to export markets where it might be more challenging for the E.U. or other competitors to match that efficiency.
Juhnke says this recent trade concern could be addressed if the U.S. follows through and completes a positive remake of the North American Free Trade Agreement as those discussions are continuing.
U.S. agriculture exports have been effected lately by the NAFTA discussions as well as the ongoing trade battle over tariffs between the U.S. and several trading partners.
