Nebraska Petition Law May Be Changed

Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale expects the Unicameral to consider changes to the state initiative petition process in light of a federal judge’s ruling.
The judge struck down the requirement that signatures must come from 38 of the 93 counties in the state.
Gale says if the ruling stands, legislators likely will consider a change to keep a geographic component in the process. . .

Gale says the ruling leaves the process with no geographic requirement…and could potentially leave rural voters out of the process. . .

The Attorney General’s office says it will consult with Gale before deciding whether to appeal the federal ruling.
