After battling flooding and fires, Omaha Public Power District management is considering closing down the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Station. President and CEO Tim Burke says they are looking at the long-term financial best interest of the utility and the Fort Calhoun Station no longer fits their plans…

The Omaha Public Power District fought long and hard to save the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant during the 2011 Missouri River flood. Some customers are now questioning why so much money and effort was put into a plant and now proposed to close it five years later. Burke says it was still money well spent.

There are about 700 employees at the Fort Calhoun Station and Burke is hoping the utility will move as many as possible into their other operations. The board of directors will vote on the proposal at their June meeting.
