Following recommendations by the Office of Inspector General, the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Nebraska has made some changes to their compliance review of highly erodible land. Nebraska NRCS State Conservationist Craig Derickson says they have several practices and techniques they can help farmers with in addressing soil erosion problems on highly erodible land.

He says since the compliance review requirements were put in place in 1985 there have been some minor changes made to the compliance reviews. Derickson says Nebraska’s farmers have responded well to those and have done a good job protecting land from erosion.

Derickson says his office is always prepared to assist farmers with their conservation practices and can aid them with technical help on their operations.

Prior to the recent compliance changes, gully erosion was only cited as a compliance problem if sediment was leaving the field and causing off site damages. Now all gullies on fields determined to be highly erodible will need to be controlled to meet the national standard.
