The Natural Resources Conservation Service in Nebraska has been offering farmers a special Environmental Quality Incentives Program sign up for those who could not plant their crops because of flooded or wet fields. NRCS Soil Health Specialist Aaron Hird says they’ve had a lot of interest in the program which gives aid to farmers who plant cover crops on those acres.
He says due to the heavy interest and wanting to encourage more planting of cover crops, they’ve extended the program to July 19.
Hird says there are several benefits to cover crops including improving the soil health, and manage soil erosion and weeds and pests.
Those interested in the NRCS program should check in at their county USDA service center and apply by July 19.
