Nebraska farmers have until July 19 to apply for funding assistance from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. NRCS EQIP Coordinator Conor Ward says the agency is providing assistance to help repair ephemeral gullies on farmland. Those are areas in fields where small gullies appear following heavy rains. Ward says this year’s flooding and excessive rainfall have contributed to the need for the program.
He says the pilot program began two years ago in Nebraska and has expanded across the country in to deal with the gullies and help control erosion.
Ward says the key problem they’re trying to get a handle on is erosion on farm fields.
The program funds can be used by farmers to implement conservation practices such as cover crops, crop rotation, no-till, contour farming, buffer strips, terraces and waterways.
