The country is facing tragic numbers of sex trafficking victims, and the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Women’s Fund of Omaha teamed on a study on prevention, protection and prosecution of perpetrators. Dr. Shireen Rajaram is an associate professor at UNMC’s College of Public Health and says they interviewed 22 victims from Nebraska and most agreed that no one believed what was happening to them.
Rajaram says the goal was to find out first hand from the victims and survivors to develop policy for prevention. The victims helped develop those guidelines.
The key findings revealed there is a lack of awareness among all segments of society when it comes to sex trafficking. Planning is underway to create a statewide plan to combat it in Nebraska.
