The Nebraska Legislature this week passed LB 324, a small meat processor measure known as the Herd Share Bill. Senator Tom Brandt of Plymouth sponsored the legislation and says it will allow producers to sell shares in their herd and have it processed by a small meat packer.
He says the other part of the bill provides a grant program.
Brandt says the COVID 19 pandemic was part of the catalyst for his legislation which attempts to address the backlog of animals at processing plants.
Brandt’s bill also makes it easier for consumers to buy meat directly from producers or processors. The governor is expected to sign the measure.
