Nebraska Legislators Take No Action on Reading Bill

Nebraska legislators debated, but take no action on a bill calling for more concentrated attention for schoolchildren struggling to read.
Senator Mike Groene of North Platte, chair of the Education Committee, tells colleagues he doesn’t understand the controversy the bill has attracted

Senator Patty Pansing Brooks of Lincoln sees a lot of common ground in the bill…and a lack of effort to focus on that. . .

A big contention in the bill is its requirement that children be held back if they cannot read proficiently by the third grade.
The bill is going nowhere this year and could return in a different version next year.
