State lawmakers have moved to end Nebraska’s status as the only state left that denies driver’s licenses to the children of illegal immigrants.
The Unicameral voted 34-to-9 to allow youth enrolled in the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to apply for driver’s licenses.
Executive Director Emiliano Lerda with Justice for Our Neighbors of Nebraska says approval comes after years of hard work.
Lerda says passage of the bill will allow young, skilled, educated immigrants to more fully contribute to the state.
Governor Pete Ricketts has not announced whether he will veto the bill.
