Nebraska legislators have advanced a bill to help military veterans charged with low-level crimes, through the creation of veterans courts.
Senator Kate Bolz of Lincoln supports the measure, but tells colleagues investing in mental health treatment could resolve issues before they get tangled up in the criminal process. . .
Senator Matt Williams of Gothenburg sponsored the measure, modeled after the state’s drug court program. . .
The bill authorizes the state Supreme Court to create additional specialty courts, starting with a veterans court in Douglas County.
