Nebraska lawmakers again are making a run at reducing the overcrowded prison population.
Senator Patty Pansing Brooks of Lincoln has succeeded in advancing a package of proposals, acknowledging to colleagues past legislation hasn’t had the desired effect.
Nebraska prisons stand at 150-percent of designed capacity. State law requires them to be at no more than 140-percent by mid-2020.
Judiciary Committee chair, Senator Laura Ebke of Crete, says the responsibility to meet that target lies with both the legislative and executive branches
Ebke says the package has been watered down, mostly because the governor’s office objected to certain provisions.
This legislation must make it through two more rounds to get to the governor’s desk.
