State health officials warn Nebraskans to take precautions to keep mosquitoes at bay and reduce the risk of West Nile virus.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Tom Safranek says the report of a human case in Scotts Bluff County is likely only the first of many this year

Safranek says the case in western Nebraska is mild, which is normally the case. Only a tiny fraction of those infected develop a serious illness.

Safranek says a few steps can greatly reduce your risk of getting West Nile virus

West Nile is highly seasonal, increasing through the month of August, peaking around Labor Day.
