A plan to help Nebraska ease prison overcrowding and avoid the cost of building a new prison has been released.
The recommendations include increased use of probation and drug courts for non-violent offenders as well as additional use of supervision for inmates released from prison.
State Senator Les Seiler of Hastings says supervision of released inmates will reduce the chance of them returning to prison. . .
Seiler says one of the proposals…requiring supervision for inmates upon release…holds great promise to keep them from returning to prison. . .
It is estimated that prison operational costs could be reduced by 45-Million dollars over five years and the state could avoid spending 261-Million dollars to add prison beds.
